This project will renew support for the Academy for Educational Development (AED) to serve as the coordinating center for the National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research (NCCOR). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation formed NCCOR in 2007 to accelerate progress in reversing the childhood obesity epidemic. NCCOR's mission is to improve the focus, efficiency, infrastructure and impact of research into childhood obesity prevention by addressing key research gaps in a coordinated way and by collaborating in reducing the major stumbling blocks to solution-oriented research. Deliverables will include: (1) conducting ongoing strategic planning for and identification of opportunities for collective action and research; (2) hosting, facilitating and documenting quarterly in-person meetings; (3) organizing working-group conference calls; (4) maintaining a wiki and Web site; (4) developing a monthly e-newsletter; (5) developing member surveys to gather feedback; (6) providing administrative and management support for working groups and advisory panels; (7) planning and convening an annual conference; (8) providing administrative support for an NCCOR initiative, the $20-million, community-evaluation project of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute; (9) overseeing the development and co-funding of major research initiatives, including Web-based registry measures and a catalog of childhood obesity-related surveillance systems; and (10) implementing a long-term evaluation plan.
