The Foundation's program, New Jersey Health Initiatives, was designed to support projects in New Jersey that develop new approaches to resolving the state's health care needs, focusing on the Foundation's goal areas.The purpose of this project is to enhance English as a Second Language program with a 15-hour health literacy component while focusing on the low-income, uninsured immigrant population in Bergen County.Through a partnership with Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative, program participants will receive direct health counseling from a nurse practitioner. Healthcare practitioners at Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative will participate in in-service training focusing on cultural differences and the impact of language on healthcare and compliance with medical protocols.
