The Foundation's Local Initiative Funding Partners Program is a matching grants program designed to establish partnerships between the Foundation and local grantmakers in support of innovative, community-based projects that improve health and health care for underserved and vulnerable populations. The purpose of this project is an innovative approach to preventing violent crime among young men of color and recognizes that both the serious, violent felony offender and those they have harmed are traumatized and need help to break the cycle of violence. Key partners are the Brooklyn district attorney, judges and public defenders who refer young adults into this program as an alternative to incarceration. Both the responsible party and those who were harmed agree to engage in developing a just resolution and both receive mental health and other support services. A significant outcome evaluation will focus on violence intervention, victims' services and criminal justice.
