Examining the role of street vendors in the after-school eating environment among elementary and middle school children in low-income neighborhoods
This project will support the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's program, Healthy Eating Research: Building Evidence to Prevent Childhood Obesity, which funds investigator-initiated research to improve healthy eating and weight patterns among the nation's children, by studying the role of street vendors in the after-school eating environment of elementary and middle school children in low-income neighborhoods. The goal is to examine whether mobile vendors are a feasible vehicle for the sale of fresh fruits, vegetables and healthy snacks, and to evaluate a pilot community-based intervention to improve the overall nutritional quality of children's food purchases. The target population is urban, primarily Latino, elementary and middle school children, 72 percent of whom are eligible for free or reduced-price lunches.
