The Foundation's initiative, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Practice-Based Research Network in Public Health, was designed to develop a practice-based research network for public health to help stakeholders understand how public health systems research can be used to improve public health performance and impact. This grant funds the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) in supporting state, territorial and tribal health departments selected for the beta test of the accreditation process of the national Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). Selected local, tribal, state and territorial health departments will test the standards and assessment and review processes for national accreditation. ASTHO will work with PHAB and the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) to recruit beta-test departments and provide technical assistance to health departments in evaluating the accreditation standards and processes. In addition, ASTHO will administer grants and provide technical assistance to the beta-test state, territorial and tribal health departments in improving the quality of activities that do not meet standards. ASTHO will work with NACCHO to provide technical assistance to tribal health departments and the local entities of centralized state health departments.
