Establishing a New Brunswick office to provide information, outreach and mental health services to September 11 families, survivors and rescue workers

Although the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation became a national philanthropy in 1972 and has operated on a national scale since then, it also has continued funding a limited number of local institutions and projects in the New Brunswick area and throughout New Jersey. It does so in part to honor the legacy of its founder, and in part to recognize the special responsibilities to the communities and the state in which it is located. The grant will support establishment of a VOICES of September 11th office, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, to continue the nonprofit's work to honor New Jersey people who died in the 9/11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center (WTC), those who worked in or near the twin towers and survived, and those who served as rescue or recovery workers. A quarter of the people, more than 700, who died in the September 11, 2001, attack were New Jersey residents. Five thousand more were at work adjacent to the WTC, or in the towers themselves before they fell. And more than 2,600 people from New Jersey served as rescue and recovery workers and toiled at the site in the weeks and months after the tragedy. VOICES will establish the New Brunswick office primarily to: (1) complete a digital archive of the stories of New Jersey's 9/11 victims, survivors and rescue workers for inclusion in the National September 11 Memorial & Museum to be built at the WTC site; (2) offer to provide the people telling the stories with mental health information, depression and anxiety screenings, and, if needed, case management and referrals to counseling services; and (3) build the organizational capacity of the VOICES office in New Jersey.
