The Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program was designed to augment clinical training by providing new skills and perspectives necessary to achieving leadership positions both within and outside the walls of academia in the 21st century. This project supports the technical assistance and direction activities of the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars National Program Office (NPO) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. The activities include: (1) a national annual meeting; (2) site visits to each of the training programs; (3) shared development of curricula between programs; and (4) a selection meeting in which all National Advisory Committee members participate in selection of the next cohort. In addition, the NPO supports a quarterly electronic newsletter, maintains an interactive Web site and on-line alumni directory, sponsors several alumni receptions and receptions at medical specialty meetings, and utilizes alumni ambassadors. These activities enhance the visibility of the selected Scholars, sustain and improve efforts directed at recruiting minorities and under-represented specialties into the Program, and assist the NPO and the Foundation in public relations and outreach projects. Finally, the NPO will continue to work with the program sites to ensure that community-based participatory research and health policy have continued visibility and presence among all four sites. Twenty-nine new scholars will be selected in June 2009 for the cohort that begins training in July 2010.
