Mobilizing citizen support for climate stabilization and adaptation policies
The Foundation's Investigator Awards in Health Policy Research Program was designed to produce major works from senior and new investigators that would add to the health policy field's knowledge base.Climate change is a huge threat to the public's health, and addressing it is among President Obama's top priorities. Along with leadership, Doctors Maibach and Nisbet believe that stabilizing the world's climate requires creating strong citizen and stakeholder demand for effective public policies and investments in greenhouse gas reduction. This project will examine whether a health perspective is more powerful in enlisting community interest and participation on climate control issues than alternative frames. Through surveys and interviews, the investigators will study people's beliefs and motivations and test their reactions to various policy proposals and messages about climate change and its health implications. Their research findings (to be summarized in a primer and disseminated in journal articles) could help galvanize the public health community and provide policy experts, government agencies, journalists, and other stakeholders with practical guidance on how best to increase public understanding of the implications of climate change and activate Americans as a force for prevention and adaptation policies.
