Developing and promoting a model congregational wellness policy to help combat childhood obesity in Oregon
This project will build on the efforts of the Interfaith Food and Farms Partnership, a program of the Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon, to work with a coalition of faith communities to conduct community food and environmental assessments, write a model congregational wellness policy--guidelines for nutrition and physical activity that promote parishioner health--and lead an advocacy campaign for improved wellness in Portland. The project will focus on four Portland neighborhoods--Cully, Woodlawn, Mill Park and Portsmouth--specifically engaging congregations that serve Latino and low-income communities. According to a 2005 survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 25 percent of 8th and 11th graders are overweight or at risk. Coalition members will identify priorities for policy and environmental change that will provide solutions to childhood obesity in their neighborhoods. The grantee will not use Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funds for lobbying.
