This grant will support the work of a research team to study the causal impact of health insurance coverage on the physical and mental health of low-income adults. The study will take advantage of a unique opportunity presented by a lottery that Oregon is using to enroll low-income adults into its Medicaid program, the Oregon Health Plan. The lottery acts as a randomized experiment, allowing the research team to establish a causal link between insurance coverage, the quantity and quality of care received, and their impact on enrollees' health. As deliverables, the grantee will produce a number of scholarly articles, policy briefs and a capstone book.
