National opinion survey on determinants of health and health disparities
It is possible to significantly improve the health of all Americans with solutions that lie outside the health care system. In fact, the likelihood of developing an illness or becoming injured has very little do with what happens in our doctors' offices, and far more to do with where and how we live, learn, work and play. Americans' understanding of and support for this approach to improving health across every income level is critical to the success of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Commission to Build a Healthier America. This grant supports a national survey to help the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) probe the depth of public support for the idea that solutions outside the health care system can improve the health of all Americans. Social factors contribute significantly to health, and RWJF has devoted extensive programming to solving health problems within a broad social context. The research team will provide these deliverables: (1) a brief report on the survey for the RWJF's Commission to Build a Healthier America; (2) a series of briefs, based on a more multivariate analysis, for policy makers and other key audiences; and (3) at least one article for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
