Implementing the Safe Dates curriculum in seven high schools in six New Jersey counties

The Foundation's program, New Jersey Health Initiatives, was designed to support projects in New Jersey that develop new approaches to resolving the state's health care needs, focusing on the Foundation's goal areas.The purpose of this project is to implement "Safe Dates," a dating abuse prevention program for both male and female middle- and high-school students. This research-based program includes four components: a nine-session, dating-abuse prevention curriculum; a play about dating abuse; a poster contest; and a parent awareness program. Princeton Center for Leadership Training will implement "Safe Dates" in seven high schools, spread across six geographically dispersed New Jersey counties, reaching 10,800 high school students over three years: Franklin High School (Somerset County), Haddon Heights High School (Camden County), Hunterdon Central Regional High School (Hunterdon County), Kearny High School (Hudson County), Middlesex High School (Middlesex County), North Hunterdon Regional High School (Hunterdon County), and Trenton School-Based Youth Services Program at Trenton Central High School (Mercer County). As a primary prevention program, Safe Dates will raise students' awareness of what constitutes healthy and abusive dating relationships and the causes and consequences of dating abuse. Students will develop skills and resources to develop healthy dating relationships and to help themselves and others in abusive dating relationships.
