The Foundation's initiative, Start Strong: Building Health Teen Relationships, was designed to fund a national effort to develop and implement effective strategies to prevent relationship violence among youth.Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a major public health problem that affects all strata of society. This project will evaluate the Building Healthy Teen Relationships (BHTR) program, an initiative that will aim to prevent intimate partner violence by helping 10- to 14-year-old youths develop healthy relationship knowledge and skills. Using a public health approach, the BHTR initiative will aim to change behavior and alter the physical, social and media environments in which youth live through the use of four components: (1) programs at the individual level (within and outside schools) that focus on developing healthy relationships among youth; (2) strategies to educate and engage parents, teachers and peers to work with youth; (3) policies and environmental changes at the community level that reinforce codes of conduct related to healthy relationships; and (4) communications strategies to promote positive social norms.
