The Foundation's initiative, Tobacco Policy Change: A Collaborative for Healthier Communities and States, was designed to provide resources and technical assistance for community, regional, and national organizations and tribal groups interested in advocating for effective tobacco prevention and cessation policy initiatives.The Tobacco Policy Change Special Solicitation builds on previous success in attracting new and diverse partners whose constituencies are most directly affected by tobacco use and exposure. Grantees are expected to apply their advocacy skills and experience to advance tobacco policy and other public health policies in their communities. With the increasing prevalence of diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic diseases among the Navajo people, improving and promoting employee wellness programs and policies is critically important. The Southwest Navajo Tobacco Education Prevention Project (SNTEPP) is partnering with the Navajo Nation Division of Health and the Housing Authority to pilot test employee wellness measures and ultimately garner the support of the Navajo Nation Tribal Government to require broader implementation of these measures. SNTEPP is also continuing its leadership role in mobilizing support for comprehensive legislation restricting the use of commercial tobacco in the Navajo Nation.
