Supporting patient and provider management of chronic pain with personal digital assistant applications linked to personal health records

The Foundation's program, Project HealthDesign: Rethinking the Power and Potential of Personal Health Records, was designed to expand a vision of personal health records and encourage the market to develop products that meet the diverse needs of patients. Under this grant, the grantee will develop two applications: the Electronic Pain and Activity Diary (EPAD) and the Pain and Activity Data Analysis and Display (PADAD). There is a need to bring the EPAD device and related support applications to the level where EPAD software would be ready for more widespread beta testing. There will be exploratory work and pilot testing involving advanced data analysis, decision support, and use of web services and the Project HealthDesign Common Platform to showcase the potential of the EPAD in a web services environment. The handheld electronic diaries interoperating with a PHR like the PHD Common Platform may be able to assist users and healthcare providers in diagnosing and managing many other conditions besides chronic pain.
