Designing and testing an interactive health game as an adjunct to standard treatment for alcoholism
Can role-playing scenario-based games help alcoholics stay sober and prevent relapse? That's what a team from the University of Central Florida explored in a study that looked at the effectiveness of simulation games designed for recovering alcoholics between the ages of 18 and 65. The relapse prevention games were embedded as "mini-games" within an extensive multiplayer life management simulation game. The study compared behavioral and health impacts of (1) relapse-prevention treatment plus access to the role-playing games versus (2) relapse-prevention treatment without access to the games.
This project was funded as part of Health Games Research, a national program of the Pioneer Portfolio dedicated to funding and supporting research to advance the effectiveness of interactive games for health.
