School Nutrition Dietary Assessment Study-III supplement to the Journal of the American Dietetic Association (JADA)

Childhood obesity is a critical public health threat, posing significant risks for children's physical health and psychosocial well-being. To safeguard children's health and well-being, Congress passed into law the Healthy Meals for Healthy Americans Act in 1994 (P.L. 103-448), which established nutritional standards for meals served to children in schools as recommended by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Despite improvements in the nutritional profile of school meals, findings from the second School Nutrition Dietary Assessment Study (SNDA-II) indicate that students do not always select nutritious school meals. The USDA attributes the noncompliance of students to the unrestricted availability of competitive foods. In 2004, Congress passed into law the Child Nutrition and Women, Infant, and Children (WIC) Reauthorization Act (P.L. 108-265) that specifically requires that all participating school districts establish wellness policies that address childhood obesity, including policies that contain nutrition guidelines.The purpose of this project is to publish a special peer-reviewed supplement to the Journal of the American Dietetic Association. The supplement, which will include nine papers and one guest editorial, is work supported by the Foundation. This supplement will present findings from the third School Nutrition Dietary Assessment Study (SNDA-III), the most comprehensive, recent, and nationally representative study about school food environments and children's food intake at school. SNDA-III findings will provide information about school food environments, students' food consumption behaviors, and relationships between these environments and students' eating behaviors and weight. Furthermore, because the federal school meal programs are expected to benefit lower-income public school students, several of the papers will explore individual ethnic group affiliation and other socioeconomic differences.
