Jobs to Careers: Promoting Work-Based Learning for Quality Care

The Foundation's program, Jobs to Careers: Promoting Work-Based Learning for Quality Care, was designed to establish systems that train, develop, reward and advance current frontline health and health care workers to improve the quality of care and ensure the quality of services provided to patients and communities.The goal of the San Francisco Community Workplace Learning Partnership is to develop, implement and assess a work-based learning initiative to increase the quality of care within a community-based healthcare organization, Tenderloin Health (TLH). The partnership will enable the TLH to address the high turnover rates among frontline community health workers, more successfully integrate consumer-employees into the workforce, and increase the quality of services. Employees will receive tailored training to help them overcome educational, economic and social barriers to career advancement. Anticipated outcomes include: 25 to 35 frontline workers will receive a Community Health Worker credential, increase wages, and access ladders of advancement. TLH will work with City College of San Francisco (CCSF) to adapt CCSF's existing Community Health Worker certificate program into a work-based curriculum. While a small amount of classroom instruction will be provided, the majority of the program will be delivered as work-based assignments to be carried out during the workday by participants. CCSF faculty will train TLH staff to work as onsite preceptors who will direct and support participants through their course of study. This project will also offer HIV Counselor/Phlebotomist certification training.
