Studying conflicts of interest in medical research, education, patient care and institutional management

Financial conflicts of interest pose many challenges to medical researchers, educators, practitioners, and leaders. They raise concerns about the scientific validity of research, the objectivity of professional education, and the commitment of clinicians to the best interests of patients. Industry is now the leading funder of medical research and is a major funder of continuing medical education. In response to increasing concerns about threats to objectivity in medical research, education, and practice, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) will convene an expert panel to develop a consensus report on conflicts of interest. The goals of the study are to: (1) examine conflicts of interest policies in the conduct of medical research, the education of health professionals, and the development of practice guidelines; (2) propose principles to inform the development of policies and guidelines and to manage conflicts of interest; and (3) discuss methods to disseminate, implement, and evaluate these principles and policies. This effort to strengthen integrity in the health professions is an investment in human capital with the potential ultimately to improve health care by promoting objectivity and reducing bias in the conduct and reporting of medical research, the education of professionals, and the development of guidelines for clinical practice. The primary deliverable will be an IOM consensus report with recommendations.
