Replicating and sustaining the Nurse-Family Partnership nationwide

Nurse-Family Partnership transforms lives through the power of relationships serving every eligible family in the community. It is an evidence-based nurse home visiting program that improves the health, well-being and self-sufficiency of low-income parents and their children, benefitting multiple generations. Focusing on first-time mothers, this nationally replicated program is based on the understanding that a first pregnancy is the best chance to promote and teach positive health and development behaviors between a mother and her baby. During the first 30 months of a child’s life, basic brain functions related to vision, hearing and language develop. It is during this window of opportunity that experienced registered nurses can have a huge impact on the future of both mother and child. The Nurse-Family Partnership model begins with looking holistically at prenatal and maternal care, guaranteeing a two-and-one-half year commitment between nurse and mother. Low-income, vulnerable mothers often face social adversity and may have limited access to good parenting role models. Nurse-Family Partnership begins with prenatal care and continues after a mother delivers her child, teaching parenting and critical life skills that usher in confidence and positive growth. Understanding the difficulties that face vulnerable mothers, Nurse-Family Partnership enrollees experience healthier pregnancies, child health and development are improved and mothers become more independent and equipped to provide care to their children.
