Increasing collaboration between local governments, schools and other stakeholders to provide more opportunities for healthy eating and active living

The Foundation's Active Living Leadership initiative was designed to educate and assist state and local officials to understand the connections among community design, physical activity, and health.This grant provides support to convene strategic discussions in states around the country to link government and school officials at the county and city levels. Specifically, the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) will work with the National Association of Counties to promote four regional planning initiatives designed to create sustainable policy networks in vulnerable communities and communities serving vulnerable populations. This will involve the coordination of monthly newsletters and quarterly conference calls. ICMA will also utilize the following methods to connect city and county government and school officials: creating a toolkit to promote regional dialogues; and developing four comprehensive case-studies, two magazine articles, and the quarterly publication of profiles of the Active Living Ambassadors. In addition, ICMA plans to create a theory of change, conduct an Active Living Ambassador meeting, and lead a workshop on these issues at its annual conference. All communications-related activities and products will be developed in close collaboration with the Foundation's Childhood Obesity team's communications staff. Given the policy focus of this grant, ICMA understands and will abide by the restrictions on lobbying with private foundation funds.
