The Foundation's Active Living Leadership initiative was designed to educate and assist state and local officials to understand the connections among community design, physical activity, and health. This grant supports the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) to champion obesity prevention in nine states by developing policy action plans for state-level education officials. To assess community needs, NASBE will conduct an online survey and will measure the progress of policy action plans developed by state teams. To expand its network and disseminate key information, NASBE will lead the Obesity Prevention Conference in Little Rock, Arkansas, for the nine state teams and will attend other key stakeholder conferences. To support these activities, NASBE will conduct site visits, hold Web networking meetings, and provide technical assistance to state leaders. Finally, NASBE plans to produce an Obesity Policy Guide, a revised Obesity Prevention edition of The State Education Standard, and an issue brief on obesity prevention policies. All communications-related activities and products will be developed in close collaboration with the Foundation's Childhood Obesity team's communications staff. Given the policy focus of this grant, ICMA understands and will abide by the restrictions on lobbying with private foundation funds.
