The Foundation's Active Living Leadership initiative was designed to educate and assist state and local officials to understand the connections among community design, physical activity, and health. This grant supports the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) in building on its work with state legislators and legislative staff in developing and implementing policies that support healthy eating and active living with a plan for technical assistance and piloting a state-based policy forum for legislators and other key stakeholders. The resources NCSL proposes to provide to state legislators include topical Web pages, a searchable database of state legislators that supports program evaluation, six publications, and four meetings (two in collaboration with the National Association of Latino Elected Officials). NCSL will also lead site visits in cities such as New Orleans and Philadelphia to focus on school wellness and walkability. Finally, NCSL will provide intensive technical assistance to enhance policy goals and implementation in two states considering healthy eating/active living legislation. Given the policy focus of this grant, NCSL understands and will abide by the restrictions on lobbying with private foundation funds.
