Public health is ideally positioned to undertake efforts that engage diverse partners, both public and private, to advance policies aimed at improving people's health. Public health has been at the forefront of successful efforts ranging from smoke-free air laws to policies aimed at reducing motor vehicle accidents and preventing lead poisoning among children. Policy can and should be a strategic tool for public health practitioners for preventing health threats and promoting and protecting healthy lifestyles, particularly in low-income and minority communities which often disproportionately bear the burden of disease; however, many public health practitioners continue to be uncomfortable with policy advocacy and unfamiliar with the elements of both policy design and the advocacy required to pass and implement public health policies. The purpose of this project is to develop, test and disseminate a Health Equity Toolbox for public health practitioners to advance advocacy to improve the health of racial and ethnic minorities and low-income communities. The Foundation's Public Health Team seeks to advance policies that help people live long and healthy lives.
