The Yellowstone Montana City-County Health Department, like many local health departments, seeks to create a community that is healthy by design. To achieve their goal of creating a healthy community, the grantee plans to evaluate Health Impact Assessments (HIAs) as a tool for decision-making, advocacy and communications. This grant supports the Foundation's interest in developing evidence-based tools designed to help policy and decision makers improve the public's health by addressing environmental and other non-health sector determinants of health. Deliverables for this project include: two completed HIA in Billings, Montana; a template for future HIAs in other communities; a summit for community stakeholders and leaders in order to engage them in the HIA process; and an evaluation report describing the success and challenges of using HIAs as an advocacy and communications tool.
