Studying the implementation of a new California public health law on biomonitoring of exposure to environmental toxicants

This project will provide a valuable model for engaging communities in implementing a recently enacted law, the California Environmental Contaminants Biomonitoring Program (CECBP). The project will document pesticide exposure; provide data for guiding policy development to protect people who are disproportionately exposed to those toxins; strengthen community groups' ability to advocate on their own behalf on health issues, and influence implementation of California's biomonitoring law. The project is a collaborative effort of Californians for Pesticide Reform and three of its 185 members: Centro Binacional Para el Desarrollo Indígena Oaxaqueño, Commonweal, and Pesticide Action Network North America; and, the California Department of Public Health. Project deliverables include survey results, air and biomonitoring data and analyses, individual results for participants, a review of data communication methods, and final presentation of results to the public, media and policy-makers. The long-term goal of the project is to reduce the adverse health impact of pesticide exposure among vulnerable populations. The strategy is to engage the population that bears the largest burden from health consequences due to pesticide exposure in the design and implementation of a combined air and biomonitoring study that can inform public health policy.
