Using an online Changemakers Mosaic of Solutions to help young men-at-risk reach their greatest potential

Vulnerable young men, especially young men of color, are disproportionately at risk as measured by indicators for health, education, employment, involvement with the criminal justice system, addiction, and violent behavior. Yet, despite the proliferation of data underscoring the urgency of this problem, our knowledge about the most effective means of tackling these disparities is woefully inadequate. This grant supports a collaborative online competition, using Ashoka's Changemakers model, to identify innovative solutions to the challenges faced by vulnerable young men. The three-and-a-half month competition provides social entrepreneurs around the world with an interactive platform to submit ideas and projects, post comments on the entries, and vote on proposed solutions. The competition serves as a time-efficient vehicle to conduct an environmental scan of the field and will help the Foundation's Vulnerable Populations Portfolio determine the best use of its resources to improve the health and life outcomes of one of society's most vulnerable populations. Project deliverables include: a Mosaic of Solutions that uses a matrix to "map" the field with an initial set of innovations and innovation gaps; competition materials, including entrant eligibility and judging criteria; a marketing strategy to spread the word to social entrepreneurs and organizations working in relevant fields; a Trend Analysis based on information garnered throughout the competition; and a Change Summit to convene competition winners and finalists and other leaders in the field.
