Iron deficiency and prolonged bottle-feeding: risk factors and racial/ethnic disparities - Jane M. Brotanek, M.D., M.P.H.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Physician Faculty Scholars Program was designed to strengthen the leadership and academic productivity of junior medical school faculty who are dedicated to improving health and health care.The goal of this transfer grant is to use qualitative and quantitative research methodologies to provide a comprehensive understanding of the contribution of infant feeding practices to iron deficiency. The aims of the research are to: (1) identify risk factors for prolonged bottle-feeding and iron deficiency in toddlers; (2) define the populations at greatest risk for prolonged bottle-feeding and iron deficiency; (3) assess iron-deficiency related infant feeding beliefs, knowledge, and behaviors among Mexican-American parents; (4) identify parents' and physicians' perspectives on the most appropriate screening and anticipatory guidance strategies to decrease prolonged bottle-feeding and increase intake of iron-rich foods among toddlers; and (5) conduct a pilot study of an intervention designed to lower the prevalence of iron deficiency by decreasing the duration of prolonged bottle-feeding among Mexican-American toddlers.
