Conference to plan a pilot for an electronic physician portfolio

As personal health records are being developed for use by the public, there is growing interest among leaders in medicine to develop an electronic portfolio that will be a life-long record of a physician's education, training, and clinical practice. A surgeon, for example, would use a portfolio to record all the surgeries performed from residency training and practice, and outcomes of surgeries such as mortality and infection rate. This information will be used by licensing bodies, hospital credentialing committees and specialty boards that grant certification among others. In the future, the information may be used to provide transparent information to the public about physician performance. This grant provides support for a conference of physician leaders who are poised to build a common national framework and plan for a pilot physician portfolio. Sponsors and co-funders include the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, the Federation for State Medical Boards, and the National Board of Medical Examiners. These organizations collectively have responsibility for much of the medical education, training, assessment and regulatory oversight. Attendees will include representatives of medical specialty boards and societies. A white paper will be prepared after the conference that articulates the vision and road map for pilot implementation.
