The Foundation's program, Transforming Care at the Bedside (TCAB), was designed to develop new interventions to improve the hospital work environment with the goal of improving the quality of care provided by nurses at the bedside. In November 2006, the Foundation funded the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) to support the implementation of TCAB into 50 hospitals nationwide to test a less intensive process. This particular project will support supplemental funding to AONE to increase the number of hospitals by 18 to increase the diversity and geographic reach of the hospital cohort. The main components of this project include: convening and managing this national demonstration project across 68 hospitals, identifying and translating key TCAB principles into practical processes and creating tools for implementation and spread. The grant will also support the purchase of PDAs for all hospitals in an effort to measure nurses time at the bedside, an important measure that has been collected at all TCAB hospitals so far. At the conclusion of this project deliverables will include: demonstration models on disseminating TCAB and replicable resource documents. This project will allow the Foundation's Quality/Equality Team's Regional Quality Strategy to implement a nurse led intervention for improving the quality of patient centered care.
