Dissemination efforts for the Blue Ribbon Commission Report on Racial Disparities in Substance Abuse Policies

The National African American Drug Policy Coalition, Inc. (NAADPC), a coalition of distinguished leaders who have demonstrated a commitment to serving the interests of African American communities and institutions, called the racial disparities in drug policies a national crisis. To address the crises, NAADPC convened The Blue Ribbon Commission on Racial Disparities in Substance Abuse Policies to investigate and develop recommendations on the racial disparities in substance abuse policies across the nation. The Commission heard testimony from black professionals including judges, medical professionals, social workers, law and criminal justice professionals, and others. The information gathered in the hearings served as the foundation for recommendations that the NAADPC will embrace to battle the public health nature of drug use and to provide a more effective and humane approach to addressing the chronic societal problem of substance use. The Commission Hearings, held in four U.S. cities and in Barbados, West Indies, provided an opportunity to ensure maximum inclusion and participation in these discussions. The report of the Commission's recommendations was released during the 36th Annual Congressional Black Caucus Conference in September 2006, in Washington, D.C. This grant will provide support for a national roll out of these recommendations and a corresponding implementation strategy that will take place in seven major urban cities throughout the United States. NAADPC will work with Murry Ford Communications to develop and implement a strategic/media community outreach that will saturate targeted markets with the recommendations of the report and to help solidify the message that the drug crises in urban America is treatable and must be eliminated.
