Creating the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Center for Health Policy

The Foundation's Health Policy Partnership in Diversity initiative was designed to increase the diversity of those with formal training in the fields of economics, political science and sociology who engage in health services and health policy research.Health policy directions for this nation are directly influenced by health service researchers trained in the fields of economics, political science and sociology. Minorities are poorly represented in this group; as a result, the national health policy debate frequently fails to represent the diversity of this nation. This collaborative project developed with the University of New Mexico (UNM) seeks to increase the diversity of those with formal training in the fields of economics, political science and sociology who engage in health services and health policy research. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Center for Health Policy (RWJFCHP) will seek to become a nationally recognized locus for health policy research. UNM has a student body that is 30.5 percent Hispanic and 12 percent Native American. The Center will have three programmatic elements: (1) recruitment to achieve the same level of diversity at the graduate level as exists in the undergraduate programs in economics, political science and sociology; (2) educational programs to prepare students for leadership in health services research and policy; and (3) support for student and faculty research to inform policy debates. The project will advance the Foundation's efforts to increase diversity in the health and health care workforce. The deliverables for this project will be a fully formed center with an active and diverse student body, faculty trained in health policy and health services research, and research publications/products.
