Purchasing the How Lane, New Brunswick, N.J., facility to ensure Saint Peter's long-term ability to treat the area's predominantly indigent population
In addition to its services in downtown New Brunswick, Saint Peter's University Hospital (SPUH) provides vital health services to a medically underserved primarily low-income Hispanic and African American community at its satellite facility on the southern edge of the city. The high costs of renting and maintaining this satellite facility, however, hampers its ability to increase staff and pay for the dramatically increasing need for medical services in this area. This grant provides support to help SPUH acquire that facility. The success of the project will be based on SPUH's ability to acquire the building, thereby assuring its long-term presence in this high need community. Additionally, the SPUH funds that would have been used to rent the facility will instead be used to expand the clinical space and to hire additional medical staff to serve many more people. This project is consistent with the RWJF goal of improving the health and well-being of the state's most vulnerable populations. Programs at the satellite facility are funded by patient revenue and support from foundations, corporations and government grants.
