Developing and disseminating community approaches to healthy lifestyle promotion for children and families

The epidemic of childhood obesity is hitting low-income and minority communities the hardest. Therefore, the Foundation has chosen to focus its support in these communities to reverse the epidemic among those most affected. This project will support a comprehensive approach to reducing childhood obesity in the City of Chicago. The Consortium to Lower Obesity in Chicago Children (CLOCC), housed within the Children's Memorial Hospital, was formed in 2002 to address the growing epidemic of childhood obesity in Chicago. In the five years since it was formed, CLOCC has become recognized across the country for its advocacy and programming in Chicago. Under this grant, CLOCC will expand its policy efforts into additional neighborhoods and will expand its advocacy base by engaging community residents. This support will also allow CLOCC staff to respond to requests from across the country for technical assistance and guidance. Deliverables for this project include: (1) expansion of advocacy efforts into four additional neighborhoods; (2) expansion of the Muevete program to include additional participants and to engage participants in advocacy efforts in their communities; (3) establishment of a community networker internship program; (4) provision of technical assistance to other cities; and (5) advocacy for policy change within the City of Chicago.
