Defining activity-friendly environments in the rural south
The Foundation's Active Living Research program was designed to support investigator-initiated research to identify and assess structural, environmental, and policy changes with the potential to increase population levels of physical activity. The primary objective of this study is to identify and better understand environmental factors supportive of physical activity across the lifespan in four ethnically and geographically diverse rural communities in Alabama and Mississippi. Another aim of the study is to revise two empirically tested urban/suburban environmental audit tools for use in rural settings. The information collected will be used by the investigators to further develop a proposed conceptual model describing the relationships between environment, policy, and physical activity participation in rural communities.
