Common Ground: Transforming Public Health Information Systems

The Foundation's program, Common Ground: Transforming Public Health Information Systems, was designed as collaborative processes among state and local public health departments to advance the use of information systems to support two different programmatic areas--preparedness and chronic disease. The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control will work collaboratively with other grantees to develop a template for integrating and developing chronic disease surveillance systems. While South Carolina has high mortality rates from chronic diseases, the state's public health agency has not focused its informatics resources on this serious problem. The new knowledge and skills gained from learning new business analysis and redesign methods will be disseminated throughout the agency and will be used to implement the data capacity objectives of the Strategic Plan. The project will serve as a model for future information systems development within the state and the agency.
