The current average age of RNs is nearly 47 years. These demographics have serious implications for the provision of care, and raise critical questions, including: how can hospitals retain a sufficient supply of experienced nurses to meet patient care needs; what can hospitals do to encourage older, experienced nurses to stay? This program contract supports an assessment of: (1) selected federal and state government agencies; and (2) private and nonprofit hospital organizations, trade associations (e.g., AARP) and other groups investing in strategies related to retaining and educating older nurses, especially nurses approaching retirement or recently retired. This assessment will include a review, written documents and interviews with key agencies and organizations. At the end of the project, Strategic Partnerships will provide the Foundation with an assessment report focused on describing the key initiatives underway by each targeted organization. The report will include recommendations of potential opportunities for the Foundation to partner with various organizations in keeping with the key objectives of the nurse education and nurse retention. The audience for this project will be the internal staff and management of the Foundation, specifically the staff team working on Human Capital issues.
