Supporting United Way of Central Jersey's fund drive, 2006-2007

Although the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation became a national philanthropy in 1972 and has operated on a national scale since then, it also has continued funding a limited number of local institutions and projects in the New Brunswick area and throughout New Jersey. It does so in part to honor the legacy of its founder, and in part to recognize the special responsibilities to the communities and the state in which it is located.The ability to provide ongoing support to local helping agencies has become seriously stressed over the past year as the demand for these safety net services has increased. This grant provides continued support to United Way of Central Jersey (UWCJ). Like its counterparts in other parts of the state, UWCJ conducts an annual fund-raising campaign. A significant share of the organization's proceeds finance donor choice allocations to predesignated agencies outside Middlesex County and the bordering township of Franklin (adjacent to New Brunswick). The grant will go to directly support 14 local youth-serving agencies in central New Jersey. No portion of this grant supports UWCJ administrative expenses. The project will be considered successful if the local youth-serving agencies are able to provide some 18,868 primarily low-income children with a variety of recreational, educational, health and substance abuse prevention programs these children would not otherwise have access to.
