Evaluation of RWJF's Healthy Eating Research program

The Foundation's program, Healthy Eating Research: Building Evidence to Prevent Childhood Obesity, was designed to support investigator-initiated research to identify and assess environmental and policy influences with the greatest potential to improve healthy eating and weight patterns among the nation's children. This program is an important element of the Foundation's strategy to build the knowledge base on how to prevent childhood obesity, and thus requires ongoing evaluation. The purpose of this project is to build evaluation into the program from the beginning, with activities sequenced throughout the life of the program. Evaluation activities and associated deliverables will begin with the creation of a tracking system of grantees' products and achievements, with associated indicators for use by the program. Also, a logic model will be developed and shared in year one to plan the evaluation of program impact. In year two, the evaluation will report its assessment of the new program model. In year two, a report will also assess the potential for Healthy Eating Research to mount joint research activities with the Foundation's Active Living Research program, a companion investment in the prevention of childhood obesity. In each year, a survey of grantees will be conducted to assess their progress and the effects on their career trajectories. In years three and five, the evaluation will report its assessment of the diversity supplement awards, as well as the new professional networks being created by this multidisciplinary program. In year five, the grantee will report a comprehensive evaluation of the program's impact on the field, as well as an assessment of grantee career trajectories based on their publications, citation indices and other evidence of both scholarship and policy impact. Success is defined as the timely submission of these deliveries in a useful form for both the program and Foundation staff.
