Collaborative front-line and allied workforce development program among high schools, public hospitals and public colleges

The need for a wide range of frontline and allied health care workers will continue to grow over the next decade. The future workforce must be well trained in new and emerging technologies and must reflect the diversity of our populations. However, the inability of urban school systems to graduate students who are prepared to pursue health careers limits the potential to meet this demand. This project will build on the long-term success of the work of the Gateway Institute for Pre-College Education (New York City) by supporting a program to prepare students attending neighborhood high schools for health careers. This program, the Gateway Health Careers Major, is a partnership between the A. Philip Randolph High School, Harlem Hospital and three City University of New York colleges -- Bronx Community College, Hunter College and City College. The program is designed to provide a strong foundation of academic preparation with an emphasis on science, math and communications, career counseling and motivation, and direct experience in the health workforce. Further, students will participate in designated community outreach projects designed to improve the health of the Harlem community. During this grant period, it is anticipated that this model will reach 300 students (100 per year beginning in their freshman year) who have an interest in health and medical careers and have basic academic skills to succeed in high school. The deliverable is the development of a cost-effective and replicable model program that combines high school education and experiences with health care institutions and colleges to work with disadvantaged and minority students of varying academic backgrounds to create a pipeline of individuals ready to pursue careers in health care.
