Sponsorship of New Jersey Governor's Schools

Although the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation became a national philanthropy in 1972 and has operated on a national scale since then, it also has continued funding a limited number of local institutions and projects in the New Brunswick area and throughout New Jersey. It does so in part to honor the legacy of its founder, and in part to recognize the special responsibilities to the communities and the state in which it is located.Even the most talented high school students are often not prepared for the standards and pace of college-level assignments. These aspiring students can benefit by meeting professionals in their fields of interest and by participating in a variety of study and life skill seminars important for their academic success. This grant supports the Governor's Schools, a high-quality summer residential program offered at six New Jersey colleges and universities. Faced with a record-level fiscal deficit, Governor Jon Corzine was forced to cut the program from the New Jersey State budget. However, he initiated and remains supportive of efforts to raise private funding to continue the project. The programs provide a month-long academic experience for students interested in the arts, humanities, engineering and sciences. Students learn about the differences between high school and college-level courses--the demands, real-life applications, need for self-direction and the excitement of using state-of-the-art equipment. Grant funds will help pay the tuition for the 600 students (scholars) accepted into the program. Other contributors helping to meet the $1.9-million fund-raising campaign to continue the program this year include the Prudential and Amelior foundations, Sovereign Bank and program alumni.
