Identifying legal authority for public health governance in the United States

Many members of local boards of health are not fully aware of their roles and responsibilities because legal descriptions of their functions are frequently buried in state documents and are not easy to access or understand. The purpose of this collaborative project is to develop state-by-state descriptions of the legal roles and responsibilities of local boards of health in a searchable database, and to inform and educate a wide range of stakeholders about the availability of this resource. This project supports the Foundation's goal of providing strategic information that decision-makers can use to improve public health practice and outcomes. Deliverables include a final report summarizing state statutes for public health governance, an in-depth analysis of statutes in one region, a searchable database, and training tools and materials. If the in-depth analysis of one region proves useful and there is additional knowledge to be gained by duplicating this analysis for all the states, further funding could be considered.
