Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program - Monica E. Peek, M.D., M.P.H.

The Foundation's Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program was designed to provide four-year postdoctoral research awards offered to historically disadvantaged physicians who are committed to developing careers in academic medicine, to improving the health of underserved populations, and to furthering the understanding and elimination of health disparities. This transfer grant will enable the researcher to continue to: (1) compare racial differences (between African Americans and whites) in patient preference for participatory decision making and in the concordance between such preferences and perceived physician behavior; (2) explore how race and culture impact shared decision making between patients and health care providers; and (3) develop and pilot test a culturally appropriate educational intervention for African-American patients with diabetes that enhances shared decision making.
