Conference focusing on the role of the marketplace and consumers in improving health care quality

As identified in the 2001 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, Crossing the Quality Chasm, there is a clear need for consumers to play a more active role in the health care system. For consumers to effectively play this role, they need to be given the necessary information to make informed decisions about their care based on explicit, proven guidelines supported by clinical research. The Center for Information Therapy promotes the availability of evidence-based health information to meet individuals' needs and support decision-making. This grant supported the 2006 Information Therapy conference on September 25-27, 2006, in Park City, Utah. The theme for this year's conference was "Catalysts for Innovation." Conference participants included different stakeholders, such as large health plans, providers, Web technology companies, disease management companies and consumer representatives. The proceedings of this conference will inform the Foundation's strategy by providing it with additional perspectives around consumers' needs for health care information and comparative performance data, and allowing it to determine how consumers should be engaged in improving quality. Deliverables include conference presentations and a conference summary document that will be available on the Center for Information Therapy's Web site (www.ixcenter.org) following the conference.
