Assessing the impact of federal funding for pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure on regional, state and local policies (Phase 1)
The Foundation's Active Living Research program was designed to support investigator-initiated research to identify and assess structural, environmental, and policy changes with the potential to increase population levels of physical activity. This project will examine patterns of expenditures of federal funds on pedestrian and bicycle facilities across states and metropolitan areas for the years 1990 through 2000. Regional policies that have resulted in higher levels of spending on these facilities will be identified by studying two metropolitan regions. Regional travel diary surveys and the Federal Highway Administration's Fiscal Management Information System (FMIS) database will be used to collect data.
