American Journal of Preventive Medicine supplement on policy and environmental determinants of childhood obesity

The Foundation's Program, Bridging the Gap: Research Informing Practice and Policy for Health Youth Behavior, was designed to improve the understanding of the role of policy and environmental factors in youth alcohol, illicit drug, and tobacco use, as well as diet and physical activity, to evaluate their effectiveness in reducing substance use and obesity among youth. This grant provides support to develop and publish a supplementary 2006 issue of the "American Journal of Preventive Medicine" (AJPM) to present a comprehensive set of research findings on environmental influences in schools and in the larger social environment that may be contributing to the growing epidemic of obesity among children and adolescents in the United States, and to the greater prevalence of obesity and overweight in low-income and racial/ethnic minority populations. AJPM is one of the nation's leading preventive medicine and public health journals. All, or nearly all, of the articles in this supplement will be written by the investigators from RWJF's Bridging the Gap initiative--Frank J. Chaloupka, Ph.D., and colleagues at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and Lloyd D. Johnston, Ph.D., and colleagues at the University of Michigan. By publishing an integrated set of articles from this large national research undertaking, both the Journal and the authors and editors hope to provide a wider recognition and dissemination of the important findings on childhood obesity now emerging from Bridging the Gap. This special issue will provide cutting-edge models and findings for the emerging field of policy and environmental research in childhood obesity. A formal press release will be accompanied by links to the RWJF Web site and e-alerts to a variety of key stakeholders notifying them about the papers and key results. In addition, copies of the supplement will be provided to key RWJF grantees and stakeholder groups.
