National scan of Latino teen pregnancy prevention programs

Little is known about effective pregnancy prevention programs for Latino youth. Pregnancy is one of the most serious threats to the health and education of Latina teens today and more prevalent than among non-Hispanic White, or African American teens. Since 1995, Latina teens have had the highest teen birth rate among the major racial/ethnic groups in the United States. The 2002 birth rate for Latinas 15 to 19 year olds was 83.4 per 1,000, nearly double the national rate of 43 per 1,000. The National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative focuses on reducing the number of unintended teen pregnancies in the Latino community by providing needed information to decision makers about programs and interventions that work. This project will provide a report of pregnancy prevention programs addressing Latina teens and will inform the Foundation's work with vulnerable populations as well as cross-cutting work in Latino communities.
