The United States Public Health Service Clinical Practice Guideline, Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence ("Guideline"), led by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), was published in 2000. This guideline was widely accepted as the definitive evidence-based standard of care for clinicians and policy-makers. AHRQ policies mandate an assessment of the current relevance of guidelines every five years. This assessment can typically result in a decision that the Guideline is current as is, that a limited update is needed based on relevant new data, or that a total rewrite is needed. Since 2000, significant new findings in treating tobacco dependence have been published including an additional pharmacotherapy for smoking cessation, treatment approaches for specific populations (e.g. certain racial and ethnic groups, women, pregnant women and new parents, smokers with co-morbid conditions), quitlines, concurrent use of counseling and medication, and system interventions (e.g. tobacco dependence coverage, cost and benefit analyses, tailored interventions). This grant supports a limited Guideline update focusing on these new data. Other funders will include AHRQ; the American Legacy Foundation; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; National Cancer Institute; National Heart, Blood and Lung Institute; National Institute on Drug Abuse; and the University of Wisconsin Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention. The chief deliverable will be an updated national Guideline.
