Support for the Cardiovascular Institute of New Jersey

More than one in five Americans has some form of heart disease, and nearly 2,600 Americans die of cardiovascular disease each day. In 2002, cardiovascular disease accounted for 38 percent of all deaths in the U.S., and in New Jersey it was the primary cause of 30 percent of deaths and a contributing cause of many more. As the population ages and the baby-boomer generation matures over the next two decades, the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases will likely escalate to levels that will impact our society's ability to finance the health costs of these future senior citizens. The Cardiovascular Institute of New Jersey (CVINJ) was formally established with a grant from RWJF to the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS), in 2001* to assemble the School's spectrum of cardiovascular-related clinical research and patient programs under a single enterprise to join the best of academic medicine with outstanding clinical programs. This grant provides support to increase the CVINJ endowment to enable it to generate the additional interest income needed to help pay salaries in Year Two of this grant. Thereafter, future interest earned on the endowment will be used to pay for the debt service on its new building to be constructed. Annual payments of $2.5 million will be made over a four-year period. The goal of this investment is to have UMDNJ, RWJMS, through CVINJ, become a leading national center for the treatment of patients with cardiovascular disease.
