Researchers have found that children of obese adults are at great risk of being overweight. Nevertheless, broad-scale efforts to address obesity-related health problems among adults often fail to include preventive interventions aimed at children. The purpose of this collaborative project with the Kingsley Association is to establish a coalition of youth service providers that will implement childhood obesity prevention strategies to complement a University of Pittsburgh-led project addressing hypertension and diabetes among adults. The project will be considered successful if sound plans are developed that expand opportunities for children to be physically active while reducing their consumption of unhealthy snacks and beverages. The effort supports a core component of the Foundation's strategy that calls for implementing community-based environmental strategies that increase the number of safe places and programs for children to be physically active.
